In accordance with Measurement Canada requirements and as mandated in Section 12 of the Federal Electricity and Gas Inspection Act, Enbridge Gas is required to replace gas meters periodically to ensure safety and accuracy of measurement.

What you need to do:

If it is time for your meter to be exchanged, you will receive a letter stating that either Enbridge Gas or our authorized contractor Lakeside Gas Services will be in your area conducting meter exchanges in the near future. We will complete the work without an appointment and leave instructions to call for inspection and to relight your equipment as needed.

If your meter is inaccessible (i.e. your meter is indoors or behind a locked gate) or someone in the home has medical considerations, please follow the instructions on your letter to book an appointment.

  • If your letter says to contact Lakeside Gas Services please contact them directly at 1-866-215-6670 and press 1. Our Enbridge Gas customer contact centre will be unable to help you book an appointment with Lakeside Gas Services.
  • If your letter says to contact Enbridge Gas, please contact 1-877-362-7434, and select option 3, then select option 4.

Lakeside Performance Gas Services (Lakeside Gas) is our authorized service contractor for meter exchanges. If you have received a letter regarding a meter exchange or replacement, please follow the instructions outlined on the letter.

There is no charge for this service.

If you miss an appointment or are away when the meter is replaced, a call back card will be left with instructions to call Lakeside Gas and schedule a follow up appointment to turn on the gas supply, complete an inspection and relight the natural gas equipment in your home or business. Note someone over 18 years of age must be available to allow us access inside.

What can I do to prepare for the meter exchange?

To prepare for the meter exchange, please ensure:

  • Clear access to the meter ensuring all sidewalks, stairs and entryways are clear of debris, including snow.
  • Clear access to your gas appliances and thermostat.
  • All dogs are secured well away from the work area.
  • Someone over 18 years of age is in attendance to allow us access inside.

What work will be completed during the meter exchange?

When the Lakeside Gas technician arrives, they will:

  • Turn off the gas at the meter.
  • Replace the meter with a new one.
  • Turn on / restore gas to the meter.
  • Inspect piping and the gas appliances.
  • Relight all natural gas appliances unless a safety violation is issued.*

*If any of your natural gas appliances do not meet the safety requirements of the Gas Installation Code, the gas technician is legally required to issue a safety violation. Depending on the severity of the problem, the gas could be interrupted/disconnected from the appliance or building to ensure your safety. To fix the safety concern and resume gas service you will need to hire a licensed gas technician at your own cost.
