Your questions answered

Natural gas is a great value for your energy dollar

Natural gas is a dependable and affordable option, at about half the price of oil or propane and 50 percent less expensive than electric resistance* (for example, baseboard heating). Like other utilities, we buy wholesale to then deliver natural gas to you—you pay what we pay, without markup.

Your questions answered

Here are explanations of some of your most pressing questions.

Number 1

What’s changing Oct. 1, 2024?

Starting Oct. 1, 2024, residential customers will see a change in their natural gas bills ranging from a decrease of about $32 to an increase of about $7 per year, depending on their location. The overall impact of these changes will depend on how much natural gas you use and whether or not you purchase your gas from a gas marketer.

Customers will see changes to the gas supply, delivery, and transportation charges on their bill. This rate change also includes a rate adjustment to reflect the difference between the amount customers paid for the energy conservation program in 2021 and the actual costs incurred, as well as cost adjustments for the difference between forecasted and actual costs from prior periods.

Number 2

Why do natural gas prices change?

Enbridge Gas buys natural gas at a number of market supply hubs in Western Canada and the U.S. We pay market prices for natural gas and then pay other pipeline companies to transport the gas from supply hubs into our distribution system in Ontario. We adjust the rates we charge our customers for these items quarterly to reflect changes in market prices, which are passed through to our customers without mark-up. In addition, there are adjustments for the difference between our forecast costs and the actual costs from prior periods.

By buying gas at different times throughout the year and using a variety of contract lengths, we help reduce the impact of market price changes for our customers.

Number 3

How are rates set and how often do they change?

The rates for natural gas and gas transportation services (getting gas to you) are based on forecasts of what we expect to pay in the coming months. Because actual market costs can differ from our forecasts, adjustments are made quarterly (Jan. 1, April 1, July 1 and Oct. 1) subject to OEB approval. You pay what we pay for these services and nothing more. The costs are passed on to you without any markup.

Number 4

What is Enbridge Gas doing to help me manage my natural gas bills?

We take every step possible to keep energy affordable. You pay what we pay—we pass the costs to buy natural gas from the market onto you without marking up the price. We also offer various programs to help you lower your energy use and budget your payments. Relief plans are also available to eligible customers.

1. Calculations are based on an estimated 2,400 m3 typical consumption for a residential customer (Rate 1). The term ‘typical’ implies a representative annual consumption. Resulting savings are for illustration purposes only. Consumption levels and savings will vary based on customer region or zone of residence, appliance, appliance efficiency and household characteristics, lifestyle, and energy prices. Please refer to your actual utility bills for specific actual usage, pricing and totals.
2. Natural gas price is based on Rate 1 rates in effect as of Oct. 1, 2024 (EB-2024-0245).
3. Electricity rates based on Toronto Hydro rates as of May 1, 2024 and Regulated Price Plan (RPP) customers that are on Time-Of-Use (TOU) pricing. It includes the Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER) of 19.3%.
4. Heating oil prices sourced from Statistics Canada, CANSIM (v735163), average retail prices for gasoline and fuel oil, by urban centre, Toronto, Ontario based on the latest actual data available at the time of comparison.
5. Propane prices sourced from EDPRO website (edproenergy.com/residential/) and assumes pricing for Zone 5 (2,500-4,499 Litres) based on the average of the daily prices of the latest calendar month available at the time of comparison.
6. Costs have been calculated for the energy-equivalent annual consumption adjusted by efficiency factors and illustrate an estimated energy equivalent annual heating bill for conversions from electric resistance, heating oil, and propane to natural gas.
7. Initial upfront costs/setup costs are not included in the energy comparison calculations.
8. Typical consumption for a residential customer is comprised of both heat load and base load. Energy comparison assumes space heating for heat load and water heating for base load.
9. The federal carbon charge is included for all energy types as reported and expected to increase annually depending on government policies. Effective Nov. 9, 2023, the federal carbon charge has been paused for a 3-year period on heating oil used exclusively for home/building heating.
10. HST is excluded from all energy types.
11. Non-natural gas alternatives such as electric cold climate air source heat pumps (ccASHP) are not included in the energy comparison. Please consult an HVAC service provider regarding specific energy options, building considerations, cost estimates appropriate to your specific needs, and electric-related costs.
