Enbridge Gas is proposing to relocate existing natural gas pipelines in the City of Hamilton to accommodate the construction of the Hamilton Light Rail Transit Project by Metrolinx while maintaining existing service to Enbridge Gas customers.

The Hamilton Light Rail Transit Pipeline Relocation Project will involve the installation of approximately 2.5 km of polyethene and steel natural gas distribution pipeline, ranging in size from 1.25 to 8-inches in diameter, and the decommissioning of approximately 2.8 km of polyethene and steel natural gas pipeline. The project is anticipated to be located within the existing municipal road right-of-way, and may also require permanent easements, temporary working space and lay-down areas during construction.

The project will take place at three locations, referred to as Crown Point West, Dalewood and Strathcona Phase 1 and 2.

  • Crown Point West will include the installation of approximately 600 m of pipeline, ranging from 1.25 to 8-inches in diameter, and the decommissioning of approximately 680 m of pipeline.
  • Dalewood will include the installation of approximately 660 m of pipeline between 4 to 6-inches and the decommissioning of approximately 920 m of pipeline.
  • Strathcona Phase 1 location will include the installation of approximately 685 m of pipeline ranging between 1.25 to 6-inches and the decommissioning of approximately 640 m of pipeline. Phase 2 will include the installation of approximately 585 m of pipeline between 2 to 6-inches and the decommissioning of approximately 600 m of pipeline.

Regulatory approval is required prior to construction. A Leave to Construct (LTC) application is anticipated to be filed with the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) in 2024. If approved, construction may begin in late 2024 or early in 2025.
