Don't fall for scammers pretending to be Enbridge Gas
Scammers are sophisticated and use many schemes to trick you into providing your personal information. They pretend to be Enbridge Gas by using our branded logos, creating fake websites and phone numbers or claiming to be affiliated with us when they aren’t. What can we do? We can work together to defeat scamming. This page will help you identify scams, tell you where to report them, offer scam avoidance tips and keep you up to date on what scams are out there. Enbridge Gas is absolutely committed to fighting scammers.
Email, web page and social media scams
Scammers are using more digital tools (email, search engine listings and social media sites, such as Facebook and X), than ever to contact you. Some scammers are even placing sponsored ads in search engine listings when customers are searching for Enbridge Gas' website or contact information.
- Never give out personal information online or to someone you don’t know. This includes social insurance (SIN), bank account or credit card numbers.
- Never give out your account information.
- Never click on a link or scan a barcode or QR code from a contact or website you are unsure of.
- Avoid using search engines or calling numbers found in “Sponsored Ads”. It’s always best to type our website directly into your browser. Customers are encouraged to only interact with Enbridge Gas directly through our website enbridgegas.com and telephone number 1-877-362-7434.
How to identify suspicious emails or text messages:
- The message comes from an unusual or unrecognized email address or phone number.
- The message begins with a generic greeting such as "Dear Customer" or "Dear Sir/Madam".
- The message requests personal information, such as a credit card number or account password.
- There are misspellings or grammatical errors.
- The message creates a sense of urgency; that you have to act now.
- If you are unsure that the email is legitimate, do not click on links in the email. Type the URL in your browser address bar or contact us to confirm.
Phone calls and text messages
If you receive a phone call or text message from someone posing as Enbridge Gas offering discounts, to pay your bills or send you money, consider it a scam. Scammers often use caller ID spoofing to make a call appear to originate from Enbridge Gas.
- If someone calls you and asks for personal or confidential information, hang up and call back using a number from our website.
- If you suspect a call may be fraudulent, hang up and call us at 1-877-362-7434. An Enbridge Gas representative can confirm the status of your account and make appropriate arrangements for payment, if needed.
- If the caller demands an immediate payment, they are an imposter. Hang up and report the incident to local police or Enbridge Gas immediately.
- If it’s a pre-recorded voice, often referred to as a robocall, be extra cautious. Do not provide any personal data. The pre-recorded calls Enbridge Gas deploys are informative in nature and will not request personal information.
- Do not click on links provided in text messages.
At your door
At Enbridge Gas, all employees and authorized contractors (including, but not limited to, Aecon Group Inc., GTel Engineering, Hetek Solutions Inc., Link-Line, Lakeside Gas Services and MET Utilities Management) are required to wear visible photo identification.
What we do:
- Meter reading: Every other month an Enbridge Gas representative or authorized contractor will read the natural gas meter at your home or business and, if required, will perform natural gas meter maintenance. In most cases, this work is completed outside and our service representatives will not enter the building.
- Meter exchanges: Natural gas meters are replaced periodically in accordance with Measurement Canada requirements to ensure safety and accuracy of measurement. If your meter requires replacement you will be notified in advance. Enbridge Gas representatives or our authorized contractors completing this work will provide identification. After the meter is replaced, the service technician will turn on the gas supply, complete a mandatory inspection of your gas appliances and piping, and restart the natural gas equipment.
- Unplanned service outages: In the event of an unplanned service outage that impacts your home, Enbridge Gas representatives may request access to your home to restore gas service and restart your natural gas appliances. Enbridge Gas representatives or our authorized contractors completing this work will provide identification.
- Energy-efficiency programs: Enbridge Gas offers a variety of energy-efficiency programs, which are delivered by authorized service delivery partners. Representatives will only come to your door for Enbridge Gas programs such as Home Efficiency Rebate Plus and Home Winterproofing programs, when an appointment has been booked, or in an area where we are connecting new customers to natural gas service.
What we don't do:
- We do not sell natural gas door-to-door.
- We do not sell, rent, or service natural gas appliances or smart thermostats.
- Our representatives will never come to your door and ask to see your natural gas bill or sign a contract.
