Snow shelters

It’s important for gas meters to be accessible and protected from potential damage. Shelters for natural gas meters are engineered to help protect the meter and associated piping from potentially heavy snow loads, including falling snow and ice from the roof and eaves. Enbridge Gas determines if snow shelters are necessary, especially in high-snowfall areas.

Installation

If Enbridge Gas determines the gas meter at your property needs a snow shelter, please ensure the area around your meter is clear and free of any obstructions 12 inches on either side of the meter and 36 inches in front of the meter. An authorized contractor of Enbridge Gas installs the snow shelters.

Example of snow shelter

This is a representation of what will be installed. Actual snow shelter may look slightly different.

You may paint the snow shelter, but you will be responsible for the associated costs and labor. If you do choose to paint the snow shelter, please be aware that paint should be intended for application on plastic materials.

If you prefer to install a snow shelter of your own, please contact Enbridge Gas at 1-800-323-5517 and follow these gas meter protection guidelines.
