What to do if you smell a gas leak?

If you smell a rotten egg odour, it could be a natural gas leak. Leave the area immediately and call our emergency number (see below) from a safe distance. Act quickly and remain calm—our emergency services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What are the signs of a natural gas leak?

You smell a distinctive rotten egg or sulphur-like odour.

You see damaged connections to natural gas appliances.

You hear hissing or whistling noises.

Vegetation dies or is dying for no reason.

What should I do if I detect a gas leak?

  • Go outside or leave the area immediately.
  • Call the 24-hour Enbridge Gas emergency number at 1-866-763-5427 or dial 911.
  • Never assume someone has already called.

Follow these safety precautions from Enbridge Gas:

  • Don’t use phones or electronics near the leak.
  • Don’t turn appliances or lights on/off.
  • Don’t smoke or use lighters or matches.
  • Don’t start any vehicles or motors.
  • If leaking natural gas is burning, call 911—don’t attempt to put the fire out yourself.
  • Have your natural gas appliances inspected every year.

Will a carbon monoxide alarm detect natural gas leaks?

A carbon monoxide alarm will detect unsafe amounts of CO in your home. It will not detect a natural gas leak.
